First blog post: One fairly ordinary action

I asked my mentor this morning, “What was the subject of your first blog post?”

Long pause from her. She didn’t remember. It was a clue, but to what?

I have to chuckle because it’s taken me “a million years” to write this post, and I realize it’s the most important, and yet, will likely be the least memorable. I’ve done plenty of micro-blogging on the social media circuit, cutting my teeth, building a presence of sorts and some confidence, but I have been too busy-shy-distracted to finally launch.

So today, while my site is under construction, you get what you get, because ultimately this post probably wont be what you remember about the value of this site, and yet it’s critical in my world that I post today.

My social media soul-sister Faith Barnard, mentor in story above, invited me to participate in a challenge she made for herself, a 30-day blogging challenge. It was something she decided to do to get some traction on her own enterprise. I said yes, in spite of pesky perfectionist golems snickering all sorts of illusory self-talk.

I figure if Faith can’t remember her first post, it doesn’t matter.

I ask myself, how well has that sense of “just right” served me in this situation up to this point? Another clue. Thanks Jeffery Combs, sound doctrine.

Speaking of first steps, I got a burr in my craw a few weeks ago when I found urbanhomestead.org, created by Jules Dervaes and his family. I have a large yard and the sprinkler system isn’t working, so I’m expensively hand watering for heaven-knows-what stupid cultural illusion for perennially green grass. When I found the Dervaes’ site, I knew I had my answer for how to cope with the yard, and beyond. Point is, today I’m also taking the first, yet relatively insignificant step of dumping six inches of Mel’s mix over perfectly good grass.

vermiculite, compost and sunflower

Getting started with the edible yard makeover

After this post, I’m on my way over to the garden store to get some more vermiculite to finish the new batch of soil “mix”. I’ll post pictures of the progress, and a year from now, God willing, things will look, feel and be much different. All because I took one fairly ordinary action today.

So, this blog, StepIntoFlow. I hope you’ll come here often for help with stepping into yours. Flow, that is. I’ll be talking about a whole host of things, from small business to network marketing to branding to social media marketing. It’s a business blog, but its also my life, so follow along as I blog on homemaking and homesteading, self-sufficiency, emergency preps and my spiritual realizations. Many times you’ll hear me rant on about cause (as opposed to effect). Cause is a hot topic for me, and I’ve appointed myself “Hall Monitor of Knowing the Difference”. Too much illusion around effects in our culture. And that’s another thing, I talk about illusion a lot. And integration.

I’m a full-time network marketer and business coach by profession. I’ve also had a blessed career as a graphic designer, writer, illustrator, brand consultant, product developer, and even a near 4-year stint as a restaurant columnist for a major-market newspaper.

I live for the light bulb. I hope by coming here you’ll have lots of light bulb moments that will bless your home, relationships, business life, mind, body and soul. Of course, applied awareness is “where its at” at this earthschool. That’s the point of this post, and the point of this blog. So welcome to StepIntoFlow.

Now, right now, I hope you’ll go do one fairly ordinary action that represents the start of something important in your life that you’ve been putting off. I promise, it will make all the difference.

I feel tons lighter right now. After all the fuss, it wasn’t that big of a deal. That’s the nature of illusion right there.

—Stephanie

P.S. And now for the IMS (Inaugural Mushy Stuff): thanks mom & dad, Faith, Larry, Sye, Jeffery, my very cool business partners, and my cheerleader children, Kyle, Anne-Marie, Ethan and Jonah. Thanks Jesse, for urging me to contribute through even the darkest nights of self-doubt. And most of all, thanks to Luisa Perkins, who was the first person I ever ranted to about the wonders of blogging—thanks for getting started long (years!) before me. Your example made all the difference, believe it or not; you “get” the art of the start as well as Grandma Ybright ever did.

    Hi Steph,
I feel I came late to the party. This is a momentous moment in your life. You will look back at this moment in time and realized it was the watershed of your life, stepping into your power. We have only a glimmer of the great life that awaits you as you spread your blogging wings hence your life.
Blessed are we to have you as friend, colleague and instigator of great ideas and ultimate truth.
You write beautifully and you really go to the heart of what matters, the heart of truth. Our minds can be so tricky. Our egos desire to keep us safe often hold us back. Today you broke free.
My day would have been less if I had not the opportunity to read your most amazing post. You tell the truth, you reveal what is inside each one of us and thank you for the opportunity to share a piece of your life.
I know I will learn much from you about branding, marketing but most important the opportunity to learn from soul sister is simply divine.
    Thank you.

Well, Faith! There’s no “late” here. You are the Guest of Honor at this Open House/Pardon-my-dust Launch! (with King Larry on your Arm) I am so excited to share this journey with you, too. Thanks for the daily encouragement and coaching. I’m looking forward to really practicing that it’s not about me, but my story can be a key that opens doors.

Stephanie, that post was fun to read, thoroughly enjoyed. I’m so excited and inspired to see what will happen to your green grass and yard. I think your very brave. Thanks for visiting today, it means a ton. I respect your vision so much! The project brought many blessings, sky’s the limit for you!

As for the yard, yes, I’m either brave or naive! We’ll see which as this thing goes forward! But we’ll have a lot of laughs along the way and I will no doubt be turning the fruits (& veggies, herbs, etc) into living creations, smoothies, pates, and the like!

    Congratulations Stephanie:

You “do” write beautifully. You said a great deal in this first blog post. I’ve been holding back what is really in my heart of hearts on my personal blog. Maybe Faith’s 30 Day Challenge will make all the difference to all of us. For me I’m gonna be working on three blogs! I jumped on this challenge because I felt it would push me to do what I’ve been wanting to do all alone!

It will be fun growing together!
